Create memorable (and unique) experiences

“You’re that ________________ guy (or gal)!” I love hearing that–and you should too. In today’s saturated creative market, where technology makes it easier to be a photographer/videographer/fill-in-the-blank creative and social media brings you an instant worldwide audience, you must be unique. You must stand out. You must be memorable.

In a recent interview Maren Levinson (@redeyereps) told John Keatley (@johnkeatley):

“If all you do as a photographer is just show up and light, you are of no value.”  [OUCH!]

Maren goes on to say that today, photographers need to be remembered. People have to be able to sum you as a visual creative up in one sentence. “You’re that ________________ guy (or gal)!” (Check out his video after the jump.)

Burn your brand into your markets brain!

Marketing is making it easy for people to talk about my business.” says Jared Bauman (@jaredbauman), co-founder of ShootDotEdit at a recent CreativeLive class on ‘Content Marketing for photographers’.

That sounds nice and simple, but what kind of content do you need to create for people to talk about it? Better yet, wouldn’t it be awesome for people become so excited about your brand, that they could not stop talking about your business? Erin Yongren (@theyongrens) calls those people ‘evangelists’. She goes on to explain that “you create brand evangelists, by creating remarkable experiences for them”.

How do you burn your brand into your potential clients brains? Over the next 25 weeks, I will take one marketing hack every Monday and take it apart. We’ll see how it came about (some where chased for a long time, others where quick pivots that translated into cool opportunities and a couple where just purely unbelievable moments), what I did to make it memorable and how many of them leap frogged right into the next one.
