CreativeMornings/Miami Soul

Miami’s soul

Robert looks more like a hit man, than a pastor and he’ll be the first person to tell you. He’s also one of the very first people I met working on fashion photo shoots in Miami, as I started coming down to South Florida in the mid 90’s to escape the winters in Chicago and New York  (for obvious reasons).

If you’re looking for the soul of Miami, look no further than Robert and his wife Elizabeth, who have dedicated their lives to serving the people of Miami. You won’t find someone with a bigger heart for the people of Miami, than these two.

The church Robert pastors is called Calvary Chapel Miami Beach, a non denominational church just north of 71st Street on North Beach, a block west of 0 Cinema with a few hundred perishoners. It is one of the most diverse places I know in Miami in regards to pretty much every metric you want to look at from old to young, from fashion models to the homeless and every color under the rainbow the only thing you’ll find in common is the love that these people have for the inhabitants of the City of Miami (…)

CreativeMornings/Miami architecture

Miami’s architecture

Ocean Drive’s art deco hotels, Miami Modern 1970s buildings, Wynwood graffiti art, downtown’s sky scrapers – everywhere you look in Miami there is world class architecture. Meet Gabriella, an architect from Ecuador. Our kids went to school together and I had a chance to photograph a MiMo inspired house she build, called the Dilido house on the Venetian Islands in Miami Beach.

Gabriella is a fireball of energy as we’re walking through the house on my initial scout. I’ve brought my youngest daughter – she’s brought hers and we don’t see either girls, who are having a blast exploring the construction site (…)

CreativeMornings/Miami future

Miami’s future

If you want to be blown away by some young talent in Miami check out the Taste of Design at DASH – the Design and Architecture Senior High School in the Design district. Ranked the #2 high school in Florida (#20 in the nation according to US News) this school crafts young artists into unbelievable creative powerhouses in architecture, fashion design, film, graphic design, and industrial Design.

One of my daughter's artworks she created while studying at DASH.

Ink drawing by Raphaelle Depuhl (DASH class of 2016)

The art these kids put out is nothing less than inspiring and the spirit of collaboration and cooperation is jaw dropping. It’s not the easiest magnet school to get into (you’ll need a killer portfolio) and the admissions process is made up out of a live drawing audition, a review of said portfolio and an interview of the student (…)

CreativeMornings/Miami history

Miami’s history

History may not be the first thing that comes to your mind, when you think about Miami. There are surprisingly many places tucked between the gleaming skyscrapers of downtown, the waterfront mansions on the bay, the yachts and jet set everyone associates with he Magic City.

Vizcaya shows Miami history

Vizcaya is one of those places. Build on Biscayne Bay over 100 years ago you’ll drive right past it, if your not paying attention, as you drive down South Miami Avenue. The villa is unbelievable, only to be outdone by it’s formal gardens. (…)

CreativeMornings/Miami Beach

Where is the beach?

… is probably the first question my friends ask, when they come to visit Miami. I think they picture us suntanning all day long. Honestly though, the only time you’ll find me on the beach is when I’m creating photographs for my clients.

Enter Jytte. Although I didn’t meet her on the beach, we did end up on one photographing for Armpocket. Jytte is not from Florida originally, but she now runs a small business in South Florida, which makes an armband, that protects your phone, keys, cash, … while you go about your active lifestyle.
