Strandbeests invade Art Basel in Miami

Strandbeests walk on Miami beach at Art Basel I saw these elegant machines in a YouTube video maybe a year ago and was fascinated with these moving artworks. “Standbeest” translated it Beachbeast and -especially when there’s a couple of them walking around- they do look like a heard of futuristic animals.

Turns out Theo Jansen, the creator of these magnificent creatures, is premiering them in Miami at Art Basel this week and I knew I had to go see these creations in person.

Driven only by wind they move along the beach silently and gracefully. If you’re in Miami, come down to the beach between 20th and 21st St. The beasts are let loose at 10:30 am and again at 4:30 pm to roam the beach as they please.

They are a true joy to watch …

Also check out the 100 shield warriors I photographed yesterday.
